Musician Cavalryman Orlando Kirtland Axtell He started his military service in 1861 for a yearlong stint as a musician in the band of the First New York Infantry. In September 1862, he posed for this portrait after his enlistment as a bugler in the First New York Mounted Rifles. He served a five-year term of enlistment in the regular army from 1873 to 1878 as a member of the band of the Nineteenth U.S. Infantry. He died in 1884 at age 43
